Bioinformatic analyses have grown rapidly in sophistication and efficiency to accommodate the explosion in available DNA sequences.
As the reliance on molecular data in biology and medicine increases, we need to be confident that these methods capture the underlying processes of genome change.
This special issue of Biology Letters shows how a "whole organism" view of molecular evolution, that views genomic change not just as a simple biochemical or stochastic process but as the result of the complex interactions of evolutionary pressures, will help us develop more reliable methods for DNA analysis.
